Last week, a 16-year-old Dutch
girl named Laura Dekker made history. She became the youngest person to sail
alone around the world! The amazing girl started her journey in 2009 at the age of 14. It took her 518 days
to complete her journey.
During her trip
by she went surfing, scuba
diving, and cliff
diving. Laura also celebrated her 16th birthday during the trip by eating
doughnuts for breakfast. She even took up a new hobby
of playing the flute.
“The flute was easier to play than the guitar
in bad weather,” she said.
No matter
how brave
and independent she is, sailing alone was not an easy task
for her. She had to sleep on a wet,
salty
bed. She also had to deal
with various weather
conditions and other problems. Many people worried about her safety. However, she completed her long journey safely.
In fact, sailing has been a part of her
life since she was born. Laura was born aboard
a yacht off the
coast of New Zealand. She first sailed solo at the age of six. She
began dreaming about crossing the globe when she was 10 years old. At
last, her dreams came true! Congratulations, Laura! | | |
